Case 1: Data gathering from remote locations
The Challenge
Municipality wanted to gather data on water pump status (water level...) at three remote locations. The cost of installing a telephone line (or cable) connection was exorbitant given the required infrastructure (leased lines, poles, tree clearing...) required to bring the lines to the actual well head.
The Solution
Provided a turnkey system operating on a GSM wireless network. The system was weatherproof, including a built-in heater for extremely low operating temperatures as well as the use of a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). System monitors numerous pump usage statistics. The design possessed an intrusion alert module sending a message in the event that the unit's door was opened and also a GPS module to alert, in the event the unit was moved. In addition, a "hot-spot" was also integrated into the solution, enabling on-site WiFi access.
The Benefits
• Remote monitoring of key pump data
• Notification of failures by SMS and email, first to technician with potential to escalate to supervisor
• Monthly reports of pump usage and water flows
• Reliable service with built-in UPS back-up
• Significant CAPEX and OPEX savings
