Case 13: Distributing department networks
across multiple locations
The Challenge
Link municipal buildings but keep each department's traffic independent from each other and inaccessible to the others. Enable employees to be at other departmental sites and access their own department's network resources with no risk to the host.
The Solution
Across multiple locations, a single internet connection was distributed through wireless links. We separated the local area network by department and provided access to each department at each location through Wi-Fi hot-spots or wireline network connections. For instance, Public Security working at a Parks & Recreation site, could view video surveillance or access files from their server by simply connecting to the Wi-Fi network, that is, operate just as if they were in their own office.
The Benefits
• Lower Internet spending, as the municipality was able to reduce the number of Internet connections at multiple sites and send all traffic out of a single link
• Employees were able to be more productive as they could access resources where they were working without having to travel back to their office
